Nutrient-rich submarine groundwater discharge increases algal carbon uptake in a tropical reef ecosystem

چکیده
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in high volcanic islands can be an important source of freshwater and nutrients to coral reefs. High inorganic nutrient content is generally thought augment primary production coastal systems but when this delivered via a vector as the case with SGD study, effects on productivity are unclear. In current literature, there limited evidence for direct association between To elucidate response SGD, we conducted spatially temporally explicit situ benthic chamber experiments reef flat along gradient SGD. We found significant quadratic relationships C-uptake both phytoplankton most abundant macroalga, Gracilaria salicornia , uptake maxima at SGD-derived salinities ~21−22 (24.5−26.6 μmol NO 3 -L −1 ). These results suggest physiological tradeoff salinity tolerance availability producers. Spatially modeling reefs without indicate reef-scale G. decreased by 82% 36% absence respectively. Thus, nutrient-rich low has algal systems.

Investigation of submarine groundwater discharge
Coastal hydrogeologists and oceanographers now recognize the potentially significant contribution that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could make to the coastal ocean. SGD may be both volumetrically and chemically important to coastal water and chemical budgets. A worldwide compilation of observed SGD shows that groundwater seepage from the land to the ocean occurs in many environments al...
متن کاملNitrogen biogeochemistry of submarine groundwater discharge
To investigate the role of the seepage zone in transport, chemical speciation, and attenuation of nitrogen loads carried by submarine groundwater discharge, we collected nearshore groundwater samples (n 5 328) and examined the distribution and isotopic signature (d15N) of nitrate and ammonium. In addition, we estimated nutrient fluxes from terrestrial and marine groundwater sources. We discuss ...
متن کاملEddy correlation measurements of submarine groundwater discharge
This paper presents a new, non-invasive means of quantifying groundwater discharge into marine waters using an eddy correlation approach. The method takes advantage of the fact that, in virtually all aquatic environments, the dominant mode of vertical transport near the sediment–water interface is turbulent mixing. The technique thus relies on measuring simultaneously the fluctuating vertical v...
متن کاملSubmarine groundwater discharge: An important source of new inorganic nitrogen to coral reef ecosystems
Using radium (Ra) isotopes and nutrient analyses, we found that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is an important source of ‘‘new’’ nutrients, particularly nitrogen, to coral reefs around the world. Nitrogen input estimates associated with SGD range from 3 to 800 mmol h21 per meter of shoreline. The use of Ra isotopes allows us to quantify the inorganic nitrogen input from this source of nu...
متن کاملEstimation of submarine groundwater discharge and associated nutrient fluxes in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong.
Tolo Harbour, located in the northeastern part of Hong Kong's New Territories, China, has a high frequency of algal blooms and red tides. An attempt was made to first quantify the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into Tolo Harbour using (226)Ra, and then to estimate the nutrient fluxes into the Harbour by this pathway. The total SGD was estimated to be 8.28×10(6) m(3) d(-1), while the fres...
